Lesson Overview for Discover™ Instructors
Below is the list of Discover crochet classes that are being offered, along with pictures of the projects, class prerequisites, if any, techniques that will be covered in the class, and links to pdf downloads for the projects and techniques.
Laying a foundation for beginners is essential to building a strong class program. Michaels has established several core classes that explore the fundamentals for beginners. To keep students coming back for more instruction, the Craft Yarn Council and Michaels have also developed intermediate and advanced courses that introduce more difficult techniques.
Instructors may offer classes in addition to the ones listed. Please see the note below about Discover Time for Crochet and $5 yarn night classes for more details.
When a student registers for a class, she/he will receive a list of supplies they must buy but NOT a project pattern. Accordingly, it is the instructor's responsibility to have enough copies of the project pattern to distribute to students, along with technique how tos they feel would be helpful. There are many tips in the Teacher’s Handbook about teaching various techniques. Prepare a lesson plan for each class you plan to teach.
Part of every Discover class, is a visit to the yarn department. While it is up to each instructor to determine the best time for this visit, from experience we have found saving the mini field trip until the end of class usually works best for a couple of reasons. For example, questions which come up in class can often more easily be answered by pointing out specific products in the yarn department and, most importantly, students usually like to get down to crocheting as soon as they come into class. These mini field trips are designed so that you can share your love of crocheting, whether it's pointing out different types of yarns, labels, helpful accessories or books. There are more details at the yarn department tours section of this site as well as a list of numerous helpful resources from Craft Yarn Council members that are carried by Michaels.
Even the most experienced instructor will tell you that the most thorough lesson plans sometimes have to be amended in class depending on how students grasp techniques and the general chemistry of the students in the class. We have all taught people who could spend a day learning the slip knot. Again, refer back to the CIP Teacher's Handbook for strategies on handling a variety of classroom situations.
Finally, we understand people learn in many different ways and there are many different ways to do specific techniques. If a student is having difficulty grasping a particular technique that is illustrated in the lesson and you have a different approach, by all means use to keep the class going.

Discover Time for Crochet
Discover instructors create their own 2½ hour class curriculum to assist students from Discover classes who still need assistance completing a project, to present a new technique or project, or to organize a class to answer specific crochet questions. Students pay $25 for this class.

$5 Yarn Night
The $5 yarn night sku is available in Moogle. The yarn night is optional for you to offer in your store.
Please work with your Store Manager on the details, but note that this is a social time for students to get together and crochet/knit and not a time for you to introduce new techniques or teach. It is not a requirement for you to attend yarn night, but if you are able to be there, it is a wonderful time to promote your regular $25 Discover classes.
