Why do you love yarn?

I love yarn because…It allows me to create! All my life I have been an artist, and yarn gives me a way to be an artist working around my children and without making a big mess. Plus, I truly enjoy it.

How did you learn to knit or crochet (did you teach yourself or did someone else teach you)?

My great grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 8 and I never stopped! Throughout everything I've done in my life, crochet was always a hobby until it became my business, now it's a business I love. My mother tried to teach me to knit when I was a teenager, but it wasn't until I was almost 30 that I really learned and fell in love with knitting.

What was your favorite part about learning to knit or crochet?

I loved the time with my great grandmother when she was teaching me to crochet. It made me feel special and loved. Plus, I knew it was a way I would always have her close to me.

What is your go-to project suggestion for beginners?

Something small so you can have the pride of a finished item quickly, such as a washcloth. I feel like once you have a finished item, you're more likely to continue. Sometimes people take on a large project to begin and get frustrated at the time it takes, so I recommend waiting to make a large project until you've completed a few smaller ones.

What tips do you have for teaching others to knit or crochet?

Patience! Make sure to get each step down before moving onto the next. It may take some people a long time to master the chain stitch, but once they do, it usually goes quicker from there. Be sure to teach some simple and small projects at the beginning so your student has a finished item to show off!

What advice do you have for someone learning to knit or crochet?

Patience! This is an entirely new motor function for you, and it may take a while to feel right. It may feel weird now, but give it some practice and you will start to feel comfortable. Learn it one step at a time and you will be making finished items before you know it!!
