Crochet---String Bag instructions

I'm taking a break from knitting and looking into crocheting again. Haven't done this for some years and am having trouble at the beginning with the instructions.
I am making the base of the bag.
Instructions are; Base, chain 43
1st round; 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook, 1 sc in each ch until end of chain.
Do not turn.
Working into other side of chain, work 1 sc in each remaining loop of chain. Join with ss to first sc. 84 stitches.
I don't understand how to work on this while "not turning" and how am I winding up with 84 stitches which I guess I'm joining to form a circle?

Any help would be appreciated.

Marie

To SharieMarie

There are various verbal descriptions on what to do but maybe this will help you visualize:

Think about your foundation chain as a something long and flat, like a ruler. You will be working your original stitches along one long side of this ruler, then you will "turn the corner" when you work that chain at the very end, just like you were working that short side of the ruler. Now you are going to go back down along the other long side of the ruler.

Or think about your foundation chain as the center of an oval track. You will be going around and around the oval track -- you will not be going halfway down the track and then turn around to go back up the way you just came.

You may be wanting to go around the other side of that begining chain >> this will begin to make a base for that Bag !!

When instructions say >>>>>
The BACK SIDE or the OTHER SIDE of the chain >>

I always , " Just go around the bend and work the other side of that starting chain !!

KT , told you right > so > Just get the picture in your mind and go around to the other side of the chain >
like driving and making a >>>> U-turn !

I don't think you'll need a picture for this question !!

You have the right idea that your foundation chain will be the center of an oval. If you have ever knitted items from the center out, this is the crochet equivalent.

After you do your first set of sc's, the instructions tell you not to turn because in standard crochet pattern-speak, turning means to go back over the stitches you just worked. Instead, you would be continuing with the same side of your work facing you to the other side of your foundation chain. You should see a lign of stitch tops and you will insert your hooks into these lines to work your 42 sc on the other side of your foundation chain.

If you need visuals, if Motherhen doesn't answer her with some of her fabulous demonstration links, post again in the Crochet forum.
