Help w/ crochet--which chain to use after turning?

I am posting a question for a friend, that I haven't been able to answer to her satisfaction.

How do you know which chain or stitch to crochet in after turning your work? The patterns always tell us how many chains or stitches to skip after a turn, but if you are making up a dishcloth pattern or just practicing, you need to know where to insert the hook in order to keep the item square.

I've gathered that this has to do with which stitch you are using, but are there some guidelines to follow?

Thanks for your help,

FPsc?

I'm working on an afghan that has a "wave" pattern across the double crochet rows. The pattern calls for a front post SC all the way across. Trouble is, I can't find instructions for it. I have found FP double crochet, but no single.

Would I just do it like the pictures/videos show except not YO when I start the stitch?

I have a pattern for a sunbonnet sue afghan. Row three calls for me to start with her shoes and I don’t like to cut the yarn and tie knots.. is there any better way to change colors in the middle of a row? I am a visual person and could use some very detailed instructions or a photo... Thanks!!!

Read the last row of this pattern row 1.

When a group of stitches is needed to make a pattern larger!

Making extra stitches >then cut the extra ones off !!

This is the 1st time I have seen it in a pattern.

I just got the "Top down for toddlers" book. The majority of the patterns call for Butterfly Super 10 yarn which I am unable to locate locally. Since I have never knit with this yarn does anyone have any suggestions for a substitute? Thank you.

How to decide how many stitches to add to get desired size

I'm knitting socks for my daughter. My pattern calls for worsted weight yarn but my yarn is superfine wool. I'm puzzled about how to obtain the correct number of stitches without using trial and error. Thanks in advance for any tips you may be willing to provide.
