I have some old patterns that call for DMC Brilliant Crochet Cotton but it is no longer available. How can I find out what a comparable yarn would be?

If the pattern provides a gauge or a suggested hook size, you could use that information to look for yarn of comparable thickness. DMC still makes a crochet cotton so you might see if it is a name change removing the "Brililant."
All else fails, DMC is still around. You could check it's website: http://www.dmc-usa.com/ for contact information and ask what would be a substitute thread.
