ch-5--8 dc and 8 ch- 2 spaces.

I understand ch is chain and dc is double crochet but what does 5--8 and 8 ch- 2 spaces mean?

Is this part of an instruction at the end of a row?

I understand this as chain 5, and at the end of the row you should have 8 dc and 8 ch-2 spaces.
