i'm having a bit if trouble understanding row 4 of this pattern - how can you crochet into the row below when it doesn't exist - very confused! any help most appreciated!

With first color, chain 158.

Foundation Row: Single crochet (sc) in 2nd chain (ch) from hook and in each ch across -- 157 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 1-3: Sc in first sc and in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. At end of Row 3, work color change in last sc as follows: insert hook in last stitch and draw up a loop, drop color in use and cut yarn leaving 6" tail, with next color, yarn over and draw through loops on hook. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in first sc,* sc in next sc one row below, sc in next sc 2 rows below, sc in next sc 3 rows below, sc in next sc 2 rows below, sc in next sc one row below, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

The rows do exist. Here are the references to the instructions for previous rows:

Row 4: sc in first sc (from Row 3), * sc... 1row below (from Row 2), sc... 2 rows below (from Row 1), sc... 3 rows below (from Foundation Row)...

It sounds like MotherHen's explanation and pictures have already given you the idea.

I made a piece some years ago showing how this instruction looks.

Right now I am making a piece with that Long sc stitch, in fall colors.

This is a picture of the Rainbow waves that I did some time ago to show the placement of those long sc stitches.
