I can't get my rows to line up evenly.

Hi!
I have been trying to make a hat for my granddaughter. When I join the rows at the beginning they line up, however, as I continue the seam curves. I just can’t get it straight.
I would appreciate your help.

I do my rounds joining by making some rows from the back to the front > this does break up that harsh seam look !
I find that the Thread/Yarn brands also (for me) lays differently.
So some projects I just join from the front.

There had been a web site that explained how to work dc in the round, yet get the seam to come out straight. If I can remember where it is (and can still find it), I'll post the URL. (Or I may have downloaded the page into a document file and saved it. If so, I'll post here to let you know.)

It was from a guy, and the address indicated he was a college student at the time - UC Berkeley, maybe?. He had made a number of items and was rather good at crochet. If Mother Hen, our "keeper of the links" has it, she will probably post.

Sounds like you are crocheting in the round. This is what happens. The join spirals up the piece.

One thing you can do is to turn each time you get to the join and work back. Essentially, you are working in joined rows rather than rounds, so if your stitch pattern depends on the look of rounds this might be a problem. Otherwise it's a nice option.

It might help you to get a piece of paper and then mark out a row of lines for each stitch.

Start with 15 lines and then mark each line per the pattern instructions. When I do this for rounds 2 and 3, I get the final stitch counts for each row, respectively of 23 and 30. Doing this might help you visualize how your stitches will line up. Because you are doing increases you will not get a direct stitch for stitch line-up.

This is a pattern that I am trying to do...I started all over again last night and again my rows did not line up.

Top of hat
Ch 2
Rnd 1: Make 15 dc into the 2nd ch from the hook, join with sl st into top of first dc.
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as a dc), dc into same st, *dc, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around, including in the very first stitch base, and join with sl st in the top of the first stitch. (23 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc into next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * around and join with sl st. (30 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc into next st, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around and join with sl st. (37 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 2. Dc in each st and join with sl st. Rnd 6-9: Repeat rnd 5.
Final Round for Brim
Ch 2, dc into front post of the dc below, then dc into back post of the next dc below. Keep alternatiion fp and bp around. Join.
