Michele Wilcox has been designing in crochet and knit for over 25 years. You may have seen her designs in your favorite magazine or her charming animals in Red Heart project books and on Ravelry.

Sam measures about 7" (18 cm) long.


14 sts = 4" (10 cm); 16 rounds = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
A, B, C, D, and E = Color A, B, C, D, and E;
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
st(s) = stitch (es);
[] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified.
Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook—6 sc. Do not join. Work in continuous rounds (spirals). Place a marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc.
Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—18 sc.
Rounds 4–7: Sc in each sc around.
Round 8: Work 2 sc in each of next 6 sc, sc in remaining 12 sc—24 sc.
Rounds 9–13: Sc in each sc around.
Round 14: [Sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog] 6 times—18 sc.
Round 15: [Sc in next sc, sc2tog] 6 times—12 sc.
Stuff head.
Round 16: [Sc2tog] 6 times—6 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through the stitches of last round and pull to gather. Weave in end securely.
With C, ch 2.
Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook—6 sc. Do not join. Work in continuous rounds (spirals). Place a marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.
Rounds 2 and 3: Sc in each sc around.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff nose very lightly and sew nose in place at top of nose end of head. With C and using photograph as a guide, embroider straight stitch mouth on head, below nose.
With E, ch 2.
Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
With C, embroider a French knot for center of eye. Using photograph as a guide, sew eyes in place on head.
With B, ch 6.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch, 3 sc in last ch; working across opposite side of foundation ch (at the base of sc sts already made), sc in next 4 ch, turn—11 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 4 sc, 2 sc in each of next 3 sc, sc in last 4 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold flat end of ear in half and sew in place. Sew one ear so that it stands straight up and sew the other so that it hangs down.
Beginning at front end of body with D, ch 2.
Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook—6 sc. Do not join. Work in continuous rounds (spirals). Place a marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc.
Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; change to A—18 sc.
Rounds 4–6: With A, sc in each sc around; change to D in last st of Round 6.
Rounds 7 and 8: With D, sc in each sc around; change to A in last st of Round 8.
Rounds 9–23: Repeat Rounds 4–8 three more times. Note: You should have changed to A in the last st of Round 23.
Stuff body. Fasten off D. Proceed with A only.
Round 24: Sc in each sc around.
Round 25: [Sc in next sc, sc2tog] 6 times—12 sc.
Round 26: [Sc2tog] 6 times—6 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through the stitches of last round and pull to gather. Weave in end securely. Sew head to top of front end of body.
With D, ch 2.
Round 1 (right side): Work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook—5 sc. Do not join. Work in continuous rounds (spirals). Place a marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.
Rounds 2–5: Sc in each sc around.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew tail to top of rear end of body.
With B, ch 2.
Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook—6 sc. Do not join. Work in continuous rounds (spirals). Place a marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.
Round 2: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times—9 sc.
Round 3: Sc in next 3 sc, sc3tog, sc in last 3 sc—7 sc.
Rounds 4–6: Sc in each sc around.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew legs to underside of body.
Weave in any remaining ends.
