Two Crosses symbol in pattern Pauline Turner book What does it mean ?????

In the book How to Crochet by Pauline Turner in a pattern are two symbols which look like two crosses. What does it mean ?????
I get it it is suppose to mean go back to that same two symbols and repeat but I don't see the symbols earlier in the pattern.

It says "(two crosses symbols) rep from * twice more.
The two crosses symbols do NOT appear earlier in the pattern.

Is this a Britiush symbol?

A Beginner trying to crochet a Mile-A-Hour Afghan Pattern: Question about reading pattern

My Mile-An-Hour Afghan pattern is worked in strips or panels. The part I am not reading correctly or understanding is in bold face type.It is as follows. Row 2: Skip first 3-dc shell; work 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc in next ch 3 sp between shells; skip next 3-dc shell; dc in sp between last dc of shell and next ch-3 turning ch. Ch 3, turn. For some reason, I am not understanding this. I am sure that experienced crochet people know exactly what it says to do.Would really appreciate help in the way of explanation or even better, a drawing of this part of the pattern. Thanks very much.Carolyn

Design templates/granny afghan

Does anyone know of a site that has grids for designing granny square afghans?  I would like to be able to change the number of squares going across and down and be able to click on the squares to change colors.  I am just getting back to crocheting and need to know how many of each color square I will need. Thanks in advance.

Beginner needs help with a Caron pattern

The pattern I am "trying" to use is Soft Shells Baby Blanket. It is created with "shell" panels. The directions I do not understand are in Row 2 (very important). It is as follows:Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), in the ch-3 space of previous row, work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) dc in last st (turning ch-3 of previous row), turn. Repeat Row 2 for a total of 50 shells. The part which I do not understand specifically is (turning ch-3 of previous row), turn.Try as I may, I cannot get the "shell" pattern to look like the photo.
