Drop A but do not fasten off. To ensure that it doesn't unravel, place the dropped loop on a stitch marker or safety pin
Row 2 (RS) Do not turn, join B with sc in top of beginning ch, sc in next dc, *ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc; repeat from *
across to last dc, sc in last dc; change to A in last st—9 sc and 6 ch-1 sps. Do not fasten off B.
Row 3 (WS) With A, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, split-dc working first leg in first sc and second leg in first ch-1 sp, *ch 1, split-dc; repeat from * across to last 2 sc, ch 1, split-dc working second leg in last sc, dc in same sc as second leg of last split-dc&mdahs;2 dc, 7 split-dc and 6 ch-1 sps. Special Stitch
split-dc (double crochet worked over 3 sts and overlapping with previous split-dc) Yarn over, insert hook in same ch-1 space as second leg of last split-dc made, yarn over and draw up a loop,
yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook – first leg made), skip next stitch, yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 space, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (second leg made), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook (split-dc complete).
Special Technique
adjustable ring method: Holding the yarn a few inches from the end, wrap around your finger. Do not remove wrap from finger, insert hook into the wrao and draw up a loop of working yarn. Chain one to secure the loop and remove ring from finger. Work stitches of first round in the ring. Pull gently but firmly on tail to tighten ring.
HAT
Hat is worked in joined rounds beginning at top. Join but do not turn rounds. With A, make an adjustable ring.
Round 1 (RS) Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 11 dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch, do not turn—12 dc.
Pull on the beginning tail to close ring. Drop but do not cut A. Color is changed every round. Carry color not in use up
inside of piece until it is needed again.
Round 2 Join B with sc in same st as join, *ch 1, sc in next dc; repeat from * around, ch 1; join with sl st in first sc—12 sc and 12 ch-1 sps.
Round 3 With A, ch 2, dc in next ch-1 sp (beginning ch-2 and following dc count
as first split-dc here and throughout), ch 1, dc in same ch-1 sp as 2nd leg of last split-dc made, *[ch 1, split-dc] twice, ch 1, dc in same ch-1 sp as 2nd leg of last split-dc made; repeat from * around to last ch-1 sp, ch 1, split-dc, ch 1; join with sl st in first dc—18 split-dc and 18 ch-1 sps.
