Why do you love yarn?
I love yarn because…it can become anything! Yarn can become the clothes on your back, the bag on your shoulder, the basket on your table, the toy your child loves, the art on your wall - whatever you decide! The only limit is your imagination, skill, and sense of adventure.
How did you learn to knit or crochet (did you teach yourself or did someone else teach you)?
I tried to teach myself from a pamphlet, but all I could "get" was chaining (and I didn't understand the slip knot either - I would just tie a knot to make a loop about as big around as the hook). Then my sister-in-law showed me how to single crochet, and it all clicked! From there I was off and running, and all the books and pamphlets made sense. I taught myself the rest, and am happy to say I'm still learning new tricks and techniques every chance I get!
What was your favorite part about learning to knit or crochet?
The sense of accomplishment and pride! When I learned to crochet, I was a stay at home mom, in the throes of postpartum craziness. Crochet came to me at just the right time. I could pick it up and put it down as needed, the supplies were affordable (and available at the grocery store!), and when I'd finish a project I could say, "Look what I made! It's DONE!" I think that feeling of making and finishing pretty things was very gratifying when I was surrounded by babies and mountains of laundry, dishes, and other chores that were never really finished. Of course, now it's more of my life than I ever anticipated back then!
What is your go-to project suggestion for beginners?
I love quick and gratifying little projects, and I think this is even more important when you are just learning! Besides all the fantastic projects shared by ILYD, I recommend dishcloths! It might seem silly to some, but dishcloths are the perfect learning projects - they are small, made with inexpensive yarn, can teach you nearly every stitch and technique out there, and you have something pretty and useful when you are done!
What tips do you have for teaching others to knit or crochet?
I think the biggest thing for me to learn as an instructor was that everyone learns at their own pace. It sounds obvious, but it's important to be patient, and acknowledge that learning a new skill takes time, and some people have had to overcome a lot of self-doubt and external circumstances to even try! Reassurance and patience and encouragement goes a long way!
What advice do you have for someone learning to knit or crochet?
Don't be afraid to challenge yourself! Learning how to do new things does take time and a bit of concentration, but you'll surprise yourself with all you can do if you have the motivation to learn!
