understanding a pattern

I am attempting my first baby sweater pattern. So far so good, however, I am to the point of shaping the armholes and I do not understand what the pattern is saying:

Shape armholes: Next row: Sl st in each of first 4 sts. Ch 1. Pat to last 4 sts. Ch 1. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked. 33 (39-42) sts.

Cont even in pat until armhole measures 4½ (5-5½) ins [11.5 (12.5-14) cm], ending with RS facing for next row. Fasten off.

modified single crochet

I would love to make this wrap as a gift for a friend but I can't get past the foundation row!! It is a pattern from caronnaturally.com made from spa yarn and it is called oasis wrap. I do not understand the instructions for "mod-sc".Pattern begins with "ch2 ,sc in top loops of second ch from hook(counts as mod-ch),*ch1, mod-sc in previous sc;repeat from * until 195 mod-sc have made, ch1-195 mod-sc".Then onto round two.I am stumped by the mod-sc in previous sc. Where is that previous sc?????????????? P.S.

Pattern Explanation--What is meant by *work 123 sc along each side of blanket?

The question pertains to the 1st round of lace edging for a baby blanket. It calls for 2 sc in first dc (clear enough). *Work 123 sc along each side of Blanket and 3 sc in corners. Idon't understand what they really want me to do. Can anyone enlighten me, please?

New crocheter confused about chains

I am making a hat from a pattern. In one line it says "5 ch, *2 dc in following ch-bow, 2 ch*, repeat"
I am very confused about how I would do the 2 chains before repeating. The way I keep doing it I end up with 7 and it runs on together. That doesn't seem to be working.

Remember I am a beginner so please explain it to me in thorough detail.

SS in crochet?? Need help

Hi,
I have a crochet pattern from the Bernat website. It is for a crochet baby shawl.
On the 6th row it begins with: ss in first dc. I checked their abbrev. section and could not find what ss means. I looked on cyca and can not find this abbrev. here. Does anyone know what this stands for?? It doesn't mean slip stitch. Sl st is the abbrev. for slip stitch. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
